Abstract

In this study, the settling velocities of sediment particles for different size ranges were measured in a channel with cross-flow to the settling velocity. The optical methods of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) were used, respectively, for the fluid and the sediments. Seven flow rates with Reynolds numbers ranging from 4 200 to 33 100 were used to evaluate the effect of fluid motion on the settling velocity of particles. In order to obtain the settling velocities of individual particles, a PTV software was developed for this research. Results show the effect of fluid motion on particle settling velocity. An expression is proposed in this work that takes this effect into account.
