Abstract

Flow duration curves (FDC) depict a flow Basin’s effects on its physical characteristics, regardless of the time of occurrence. Commonly, the FDCs are estimated from historical records recorded by measuring stations, and they are input to calculate water resources management indexes such as the water regulation index. In practice, CDC regionalization techniques are used to study ungauged basins due to the scarcity of hydrological records. This research seeks to assess the performance of the DWB model based on daily inputs for simulating CDC in two sub-basins of the Sogamoso River with different characteristics (El Tablazo y Puente Colonial). A methodology is developed that uses the aridity index to identify four hydrologically contrasted periods, two wet and two dry periods. Subsequently, eight calibration-validation experiments were implemented based on combining the previously identified periods. Finally, from the qualitative and quantitative comparison with bias signatures in the medium, high, and low flows, the results obtained by the DWB model were evaluated. In general terms, it was found that the exercise was successful in the largest sub-basin and that the model failed to reproduce low flows, underestimating flow values for all the experiments assessed.
