Abstract
This article makes use of gender theory in order to analyze the emergence of social work and the construction of professional identity of social workers in Mexico. It will be demonstrated that hegemonic gender discourse influenced greatly the emergence and development of this profession. These stigmatizing gender discourses that emerged during the 19th Century in Mexico influenced the characteristics of the first schools of social work which where found during the 20th Century and continue to be reproduced without substantial changes until today.Downloads
