Aquatic weed control in Mexico
Keywords:
Control de malezas, lirio acuático, Eichhornia crassipes, manejo integral, calidad del aguaAbstract
A description is given of aquatic weed control methods used domestically and abroad. The strategies and goals of the Aquatic Weed Control Program (PROCMA, from its name in Spanish) developed by the Mexican Institute of Water Technology, and the results obtained with the Ayutla River Watershed, in Jalisco, are also cited. Experience with water weed control programs showed that integral control must be implemented including chemical, mechanical, biological and hydraulic techniques specifically adapted to each site, that maintenance programs are indispensable, and that citizen involvement are all vital to the sustainability of any control effort.
