Social capital and vulnerability to extreme meteorological events: lessons from the San Felipe municipality, Yucatan coast, Mexico

This paper briefly reviews the principles of social capital from the perspective of the voice of its key players, and based on that it seeks to identify practices and expressions of social capital in the municipality of San Felipe, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. The usefulness, scope and limitations of this approach in reducing social vulnerability are analyzed to contextually and empirically explain the possible relationships between the meanings of social capital andits contribution to reducing social vulnerability to extreme weather events.
