Abstract

When hydrometric records are not available, design floods are estimated through hydrological methods based on intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves. These curves can be estimated using hourly and daily predictions in locations without recording rain gauges. The occurrence of a linear relation between these predictions was verified for two different geographical zones in Mexico, one semiarid and the other sub-humid. This work shows how to find the regional linear relation, which leads to more accurate hourly predictions and therefore more certain IDF curves, according to the method based on the Chen formula.
